Investments in digital solutions, including AI-based technologies and automation, can help keep medical device manufacturers aligned with regulatory standards.

In today’s regulatory landscape, many medtech companies face increased barriers to obtaining product compliance, with one of the greatest obstacles being the complexity of meeting requirements across global regions. In the absence of traceability systems that alert manufacturers to regulatory changes, many medtech companies are at risk of facing legal repercussions and failing to ensure the efficacy of their products.
When companies fail to meet regulatory standards, they can face fines, sanctions, and potential market exclusion, causing them to fall behind competitors. With longer approval timelines due to a lack of regulatory compliance, these delays can result in significant revenue loss. Medtech companies that have to take a Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) due to non-compliance can total up to $10,000; addressing a warning letter may cost $2 million for a simple fix or up to $20 million if there are significant productions required; and resolving a consent decree can top $100 million, according to data from Bain & Company.
In order to meet the needs of today’s regulatory landscape, medtech companies need to consider implementing a regulatory approach that utilizes automation and AI to help stay compliant and keep up with the constant regulatory updates across regions.
One of the main barriers that medtech companies face when it comes to regulatory compliance is a lack of a regulatory approach both internally and externally. In a highly regulated industry like medtech, there are many considerations that companies have to keep in mind when it comes to regulation, as product defects could have devastating consequences on a user.
Both the U.S. and the EU dominate the global medtech industry. At the same time, they have some of the most complex regulatory standards in the world to ensure patient safety.
Medtech company executives need to implement a regulatory approach that ensures communication across the business, removing potential silos, by setting a level of expectations, hosting regular company trainings, and encouraging cross-functionality across departments. Not only can medtech companies use this approach internally, but they can apply it externally with partners like supply chain manufacturing consultants, legal experts and notified bodies to ensure regulatory compliance.
Many companies still rely on outdated, paper-based systems to track regulatory updates. Since these types of systems can’t receive real-time data regulatory indication changes, tracing and managing these requirements becomes time-consuming and prone to error.
The reliance on manual documentation and processes creates inefficiencies, leading to valuable time lost in tracking and increasing the risk of not meeting regulatory standards.
For medtech companies to mitigate risks of being non-compliant, it’s crucial to adopt systems that use automation and AI to give real-time updates, making manufacturers aware of regulatory shifts instantly and giving them the ability to modify products to fit those standards in real-time. Taking this action will accelerate product development timelines, reducing time-to-market so companies can stay competitive in the industry.
Medtech companies can continue to accelerate compliance processes and improve cross-department collaboration by leveraging digital tools, which have the ability to improve operational efficiency and innovation. Digital transformation enables company systems to be interoperable, allowing for the exchange of real-time data between technologies.
According to recent data from Deloitte, 51% of surveyed medtech leaders see digital innovation as a long-term bet, and 18% see it as necessary at all costs, emphasizing the need for companies to follow suit in order to maintain market competitiveness.
In addition to greater efficiency, medtech companies that prioritize digital transformation also have better security postures. By implementing safeguards with modernized technology, companies have less risk of cyberattacks, another element that could prolong the regulatory approval process.
Medtech companies need to embrace modernized technology to ensure efficiency in the regulatory approval process, and need to continue to adopt the latest systems as the regulatory process continues to evolve.
AI and automation processes are revolutionizing the medtech regulatory approval process, so it’s crucial for manufacturers to use the latest tech to maintain a competitive edge.
Since regulatory approvals are in place to ensure product safety for patients, all necessary steps should be taken to establish a high level of trust with medtech customers. The medtech industry will always need to rely on evolving regulatory standards to ensure product compliance, so manufacturers must have access to real-time data to make the regulatory process more efficient.
